ALTERNA RUSH THE MOVIE

We are currently accepting donations to aid completion of our upcoming documentary, ALTERNA RUSH. ALTERNA RUSH will showcase the Graybanded Kingsnake (Lampropeltis alterna), the rich culture and interesting individuals who search for, keep, and breed them, as well as the current battle being waged over the right to hunt the roadways of West Texas.

For more than forty years herpers have used the roadways and public right of ways of West Texas to pursue reptiles and amphibians of many species, the gem of them all being the graybanded kingsnake. In the spring of 2007 this was put to a stop by a house bill outlawing the pursuit, capture or take of snakes and other wildlife from public roads or right of ways. The snake hunters have formed a group to fight the decision.

Will the legislators and the herpers be able to come to a compromise? In ALTERNA RUSH, you will see up close interviews with big names in the grayband world, authors of books and articles about the snake, a musician who has a CD of reptile hunting songs, and a man who gave up his life up north to run a motel that caters to reptile and amphibian enthusiasts.

You will hear arguments for and against the house bill, which outlawed road cruising from hunters, lawmakers and law enforcers. In addition to graybands, you will see many of the interesting animals found in the region they call home, as well as the dramatic landscapes of the chihuahuan desert. You will hear, from the mouths of men who have searched the Trans-Pecos for nearly four decades, why they come back every year to get that ALTERNA RUSH.

LOOK BOTH WAYS

We are currently seeking sponsorship for this project and we will begin filming on July 18th 2009.  If you own a business and would like to sponsor this film, please contact Dan at Sponsorship@smallscaleflms.com

Look Both Ways will be a showcase of the diamondback terrapin and the people who are working to protect it.  Every year hundreds of gravid female terrapins crawl out of the sea to lay their eggs, only to be smashed by cars as they cross roads to their laying grounds.  Members and volunteers from the Wetlands Institute of Southern New Jersey do their part for the species by road cruising to remove live animals from danger, collecting and rehabilitating the injured, and salvaging eggs from the bodies of the dead terrapins.  The young ones are given a head start in captivity and then released into the sea.

HOME ON THE RANGE

We are currently seeking sponsorship for this project and we will begin filming in April of 2009.  If you own a business and would like to sponsor this film, please contact Dan at Sponsorship@smallscalefilms.com

Home on the Range will be a short film about the Kansas Herpetological society, its founders, and its members.  Through strong public outreach programs and fun outdoor activities, the Kansas Herpetological society helps to inspire and train the next generation of herpetologists by bringing together academians and regular folks.  We will interview officers, founders and members as well as film herp counts and other scientific programs dealing with herpetology.
